From 2013 to August 2018, Saffitz worked as a Senior food editor at Bon Appetit magazine.

The series Gourmet Makes debuted in July 2017. It shows Saffitz replicating junk food (Twizzlers, Sour Patch Kids, Pop-Tarts, Cheetos, Twinkies, and Cadbury Creme Eggs) using gourmet ingredients.

”We tape in the test kitchen of Bon Appetit, and in every episode, I attempt to reverse-engineer and then re-create a homemade version of a classic candy or snack food,” she told Jimmy Fallon in early 2020. ”It takes three to four days. We’ve done Twinkies, Twizzlers, Sour Patch Kids, Snickers. It really runs the gamut.

I fail a lot on the show, so I have to always back up, correct course, take a different direction. I think that people like that kind of behind-the-scenes look at all the trial and error.”

YouTube

On August 24, 2020, Claire created her YouTube channel; however, the first recipe video was uploaded on December 3.

”I’m thrilled (and weirdly nervous?) to announce that I officially have my own YouTube channel,” Saffitz said on Instagram. ”It’s one thing to read a recipe, but it’s another thing entirely to see it made, so feel free to follow along just as we enter prime baking season.”

On October 7, 2020, Saffitz announced that she is no longer working with Bon Appétit magazine.

She stated: ”I’m grateful to Bon Appétit and CNE for the opportunity to build my career on their platforms, but this opportunity was not granted equally to all.”

Saffitz’s contract with the company that owns Bon Appétit (Condé Nast Entertainment) ended in May 2020.

”I also wanted to be more in control of my career path and my choices going forward,” Claire told St. Louis on the Air.

Note – in June 2020, Bon Appétit’s then editor-in-chief Adam Rapoport left the company after a photo resurfaced that shows Adam at a Halloween party wearing stereotypical costumes meant to portray a Puerto Rican look.

Following Rapoport’s resignation, test kitchen celebrities — Priya Krishna, Amiel Stanek, Sohla El-Waylly, Carla Lalli Music, Rick Martinez, Christina Chaey, Gaby Melian, Alex Delany, and Molly Baz also left the company.

In early 2021, she started contributing to NYT Cooking.

Book

On October 20, 2020, Saffitz published a book titled – ”Dessert Person: Recipes and Guidance for Baking with Confidence.”

In the book, Claire presents many recipes. The book also has photos with step by step guides. Some of the recipes span four pages.

”This very much is a baking book,” Saffitz told Taste Cooking. ”I would certainly characterize it that way. And the title is Dessert Person, but it is not literally a book of all desserts.”

On October 21, 2020, it was reported that Saffitz inked an agreement with Creative Artists Agency. The agency will represent Claire in all areas except books.

”I have taken a break from online life recently and focused like so many of us on how to live healthfully,” Saffitz announced on Instagram on September 8, 2020. She also said: ”I want the future to look professionally and personally. (To that end, I also got married!)”
