Altoona, PA (WJAC) — Authorities say clean up crews are on scene of a reported train derailment that occurred overnight in Altoona at one of the Norfolk Southern railyards.
According to a post from Altoona firefighters, emergency officials were notified of the derailment around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Officials say the derailment is "visible" from the North 8th Street bridge.
Emergency officials say there is no danger to the public and officials from Norfolk Southern say no injuries were reported.
"Early this morning we had a few cars derail within our yard in Altoona. There were no injuries. Our crews will be cleaning up and making any necessary repairs today," a spokesperson told 6 News.
According to the county EMA director, Mark Taylor, the derailment was reported "right away" and no hazmat units were required.
Officials say a total of six cars overturned in the yard.
“There is no concern from the county’s perspective," Taylor added.
The public is being asked not to contact 911 to report the derailment as authorities are aware of the situation.
