Red Dead Redemption 2 How to Use Dead Eye

June 2024 · 3 minute read

Dead Eye in RDR2 is one of the most important mechanics in the game. Knowing how to use Dead Eye in Red Dead Redemption 2 is going to be key to your success. This goes both for normal gunfights, and double so if you’re in a duel. The game does a good job of explaining how Dead Eye works in RDR2, but things might still be a bit foggy for you. If that is the case, our Red Dead Redemption 2 How to Use Dead Eye guide will hopefully clear things up for you.

How to use Dead Eye in RDR2?

To use Dead Eye in Red Dead Redemption 2, you have to first have your weapon holstered. Then, slowly press and hold R2 (PlayStation 4) or RT (Xbox One). Wait for the meter in the lower right corner to fill up, next to the word “Draw.” You can stay in this “mode” as long or as short as you need. Once you fill the bar up as much as you can, press R2 / RT again to enter Dead Eye mode. Then, take aim, or use whatever Dead Eye special ability you want, and press R2 again to shoot. Simple and elegant, really.

The same goes for duels, which basically revolve entirely around using Dead Eye. We’ve gone over that in detail in our Red Dead Redemption 2 How to Duel guide, but we’ll give you a quick rundown here. When you enter a duel, you have to, again, slowly press and hold R2 or RT to fill up the bar in the lower right corner. The longer you do fill the bar, the better your aim will be. Press the button again to enter Dead Eye, then aim, and press R2 again to fire. That’s basically all there is to it. The only real difference is that time and precision are more of a factor here, since the opponent will insta-kill you if they’re quicker on the draw.
