KETTERING, Ohio (WKEF) — A man was accused of gross abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence after a pair of severed legs were found in a home in Ohio.
Edgar Keiter Jr., 52, was arraigned at Kettering Municipal Court Monday.
The Trotwood Police Department on April 22 reported finding a bag containing two human legs at an apartment in Kettering. Police said the legs belonged to Edgar Keiter Sr.
Witnesses reportedly put Keiter's son at his father's apartment the night before police found the legs there, according to authorities.
Police also said Keiter Sr.'s apartment had been "cleared out" and carpet removed the week of April 14, adding the son had been seen driving his father's car.
Authorities said they searched a storage unit, where more body parts were found, as well as items from the apartment.
The person who reserved the storage unit reportedly told police Keiter Jr. had asked them to reserve it in their name.
Also, police said they found carpet with blood stains in a garage near Keiter Jr's home. Police said the garage does not belong to Keiter Jr.; however, he asked the owner if he could store belongings there.
Police said witnesses told them Keiter Jr. brought the carpet and other items from the apartment to the garage.
WKEF spoke with two neighbors about the incident.
"It was really scary because I have an 8-year-old that actually explores all of these woods and stuff, and he always brings home stuff," Martha Chatterton, who lives a few houses down from where the legs were found, said. "So, that scared me because I'm like well, what if he brings home another body part? What if there's body parts out here that they missed?"
She added that the neighborhood is a tight-knit community.
"We all know each other and usually ... anytime anybody's going on vacation, we watch each other's houses, and everybody knows just about everybody's phone number if there's strange cars or people walking," said Chatterton.
However, the address where the remains were found has changed the neighborhood since it's a rental property, according to neighbors.
"It's been rented to two or three different people, and it's kind of just a lot of traffic in and out... late at night," said Kathryn Hughes.
Keiter Jr. remains in jail on a $2.5 million bond.
